The Origin of Última Esperanza

Juan Ladrillero sailed through the fjord facing the present-day hotel and named it Última Esperanza. Since then, its name has remained inseparable from the landscape and history of this territory.

1896

The First Buildings of Puerto Bories

Rodolfo Stubenrauch established sheds, a sawmill, homes and a pier. This marked the beginning of the industrial history of the site now home to The Singular Patagonia.

1911

Puerto Natales Is Founded

The activity of Puerto Bories encouraged settlement throughout Última Esperanza. Puerto Natales was founded in 1911, and its development became deeply connected to the industrial complex.

1915

Puerto Bories Begins Operations

Puerto Bories began operating as one of Patagonia’s most advanced industrial complexes. Its buildings, workshops, pier and machinery still define the identity of the hotel today.

1910 - 1970

A Community Built Around Bories

For nearly seven decades, workers, families and many different trades brought Puerto Bories to life. Its homes, workshops and locomotives became an essential part of the history of Última Esperanza.

The Silence After Industry

After operations ceased, the buildings and machinery remained as witnesses to a defining chapter in the region’s history. Puerto Bories entered a period of abandonment and decline.

1996

A Legacy Worth Preserving

Puerto Bories was declared a National Historic Monument in recognition of its architectural, industrial and social value, protecting one of the most important witnesses to Patagonia’s history.

1998–1999

The Recovery of Puerto Bories Begins

After years of abandonment, a heritage recovery process began to rescue the buildings, materials and industrial remains without erasing the traces left by time.

1999–2011

Restoring Without Erasing the Past

Pedro Kovacic led a heritage restoration in which the history of the building guided every architectural decision. Enrique Concha & Co developed the interior architecture and design, subtly integrating the new spaces among the original walls, materials and machinery.

2011 hasta hoy

A Living Heritage

The Singular Patagonia opened in December 2011 within the historic buildings of Puerto Bories. Its original walls, machinery, chimneys and spaces now coexist with hospitality, gastronomy and the life of the hotel.
